RESEARCH GUIDE for ART HISTORY RESEARCHERS
Research on a Specific Exhibition
- Most of art libraries have exhibition catalogues available
that can be found on their online catalogs. Art institutions
collect exhibition catalogues of the shows that were held in
them. In the case of rare exhibition catalogues that cannot be found in
your local art libraries, please contact the host art institutions where
the exhibitions of your interest were held.
- Annual Records publications of the art institutions are
also good sources for getting information on the details of the
exhibitions. Most art museum libraries keep reference files for their
host institution exhibition information, so please ask librarians at the
reference desk for assistance.
- Exhibition Records (i.e., curatorial notes,
administrative records, etc.) in the institution archives are also good
resources available for advanced level researchers. Their availability
also depends on the processing rate of the institution archivists.
Please check with the library or the archive of the institution of your
interest to inquire about accessibility. Please note that access to
some records are restricted for the preservation or the security
purpose.
- Sometimes, there are also vertical files that contain
information collected by the host institution library.
- Also look for articles on the exhibition of your interest. Click
