Telling their story --Archive aims to document the Puerto Rican experience in New Jersey
Samuel Delgado recalls the photograph as the one in his grandmother's house that other family members always wanted. Delgado's late grandfather, Juan Lugo, is shown standing proudly in his World War I Army uniform. "It's a pretty cool one -- my grandmother had it forever," the 47-year-old Montclair resident says of the picture. "It was taken in 1916, and now my uncle has the original one. He (Lugo) was on active duty in the Army in Puerto Rico.
"I guess he was in a garrison environment, kind of training -- nothing special, just an ordinary guy," Delgado adds. "But the picture means to me as a Puerto Rican that we have been part of this country's fabric longer than we really think. Even back in 1916, when Puerto Ricans were not given citizenship until 1917, my grandfather had joined the Army."
A copy of that picture is one of the first contributions offered to an archive being established by the Newark Public Library to document the history of New Jersey's Puerto Rican community. It will be the first effort of its kind relating to the Puerto Rican diaspora in the state, and the library is asking the public to search through their photo albums and attics and among other collections for items to help tell this story.
Photographs and other memorabilia, including marriage certificates, service papers and other documents, are being sought for possible inclusion in the archives. The older the better, organizers say.
"We want to create a safe haven for these things to help protect them," notes project archivist and Paterson resident Yesenia Lopez . "It'll be an ongoing collecting process. We're looking for anything and everything that documents the history of the Puerto Rican community in New Jersey."
Puerto Ricans were the first Hispanics to settle in New Jersey, starting to arrive around 1917. In the 1940s, larger numbers of Puerto Ricans came to live in the state's southwestern portion, where there was farm work. By the 2000 Census, there were 366,788 Puerto Ricans in New Jersey.
"Puerto Ricans had come here before 1917, when the United States granted Puerto Ricans U.S. citizenship, but now it was less troublesome -- no special cards were issued to them," said Olga Jimenez Wagenheim, a retired Rutgers University professor who taught the history of Latin America and the Caribbean, and chair of the library's Hispanic Research and Information Center organizing committee. "This also coincided with a surplus of ships after World War I that were available for the transport of people.
"By the (latter part of the) 1940s it was a fairly important community (in southern New Jersey), and between the '40s and '60s there was a huge growth and Puerto Ricans all over the state," she adds.
Wagenheim notes the Garden State Association, an umbrella organization for several smaller farming groups, was recruiting Puerto Ricans as migrant workers.
"By the 1950s and 1960s there were between 20,000 and 30,000 Puerto Rican farm workers being brought in every year," Wagenheim says. "Once they had jobs on the farms, they decided to settle in Camden and Vineland and take steady jobs in the area."
Ingrid Betancourt, coordinator of multi-cultural services and collections for the Newark library, says the history of Puerto Ricans in New Jersey is a "puzzle" that needs its pieces.
"We all have different bits of that puzzle," Betancourt says. "If we lose a piece, then we're not going to have a full picture."
Plans are for some of the materials to become available to researchers by next year. They will be viewed only by appointment and will not be allowed to be taken from the library.
Archivists will determine which items will be entered into the collection.
"You can't collect everything. Some things we'll have to let go," Wagenheim says. She adds the library also needs trained bilingual archivists to help with the project.
Betancourt says the collection will be similar to others that document the history of Hispanics, including the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at City University of New York.
"We want to determine who has what, and go out and acquire as we can," Betancourt adds. "We fully expect to finish surveying the state in 2004 and then look and see what we have."
Collection efforts so far have been concentrated in the southern part of the state, with Lopez gathering materials from homes and other locations in West Trenton, Camden, Vineland, Atlantic City and Penns Grove.
Lopez plans to start expanding her search to other parts of the state slowly -- preferring to meet with prospective donors so the fullest possible descriptions of the materials can be provided to researchers.
Wagenheim, a Millburn resident, has offered some of her own books on Puerto Ricans to the project, as well as some historical primary documents and interviews started in 1988 with Hispanics from New Jersey.
Other contributions so far include a collection of research done by 55-year-old West Trenton resident Michael Fernandez for a history dissertation he started but never completed on the migration of Puerto Ricans to New Jersey.
"I have archival records like baptismal and marriage certificates and a lot of personal information, like where people came from originally on the island," says Fernandez, who was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Elizabeth. "It's a way of tracking the first immigrants, and I got to know some of these families."
Fernandez, an immigration historian and member of the New Jersey Historical Commission, notes much of his research concentrated on the Puerto Rican migration to Perth Amboy. He says the Our Lady of Fatima Church in Perth Amboy provided some documents, such as marriage records.
"There was a shortage of labor, particularly in the smelting and refining industries in Perth Amboy after World War II," Fernandez adds. "Our Lady of Fatima used to be a Portuguese church, and it was the first church (in town) to accept us. They made sure we didn't fall through the cracks when it came to services. They helped us with things like jobs, like churches did for the Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants."
Delgado, also a member of the library's Hispanic Research and Information Center, is the external affairs director at Verizon for Union and Middlesex counties. He says the everyday people -- like his grandfather -- can be the integral parts of an historic tale.
"His (Lugo's) sons also joined the American Army when they came to this country -- showing that Puerto Ricans are at the table," Delgado adds. "He also affected my life. I spent 23 years in the Marine Corps."
Referring to the photograph, he adds, "It's an important period piece that kind of documents the many little contributions Puerto Ricans have made to this country. Everything doesn't have to be anything heroic. Sometimes it's just something day to day and ordinary, yet it's a contribution that makes a difference."
The project is funded by the New Jersey Historical Commission in Trenton and the Lucius and Eva Eastman Foundation.

National Archives to Display Gettysburg Address and Emancipation Proclamation
WASHINGTON, Dec. 15 -- As part of the new exhibition titled "The People's Vote," the National Archives will display two of the most treasured and important documents in American history: The Gettysburg Address which is on special loan from the Library of Congress, and the Emancipation Proclamation. Each will be displayed for one day only.
-- The Gettysburg Address will be on display on opening day, Monday, December 15.
-- The Emancipation Proclamation will be displayed on the final day of the exhibition Monday, January 19, 2004.
The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is in the Special Exhibition Gallery of the National Archives Building, located at 700 Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.
The exhibition features the original documents that received the most votes from the nationwide initiative titled The People's Vote: 100 Documents That Shaped America. The program was launched by Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin on September 17, 2003, Constitution Day. It challenged Americans to a lively and thoughtful debate about which documents in American history are the most influential. The People's Vote invited Americans to vote for 10 milestone documents from the list of 100, chosen by historians and experts at the National Archives. Thousands of Americans of all ages, from across the entire United States answered the challenge.
The Gettysburg Address, which has not been seen by the public since 1999, was voted as the 8th most important document in American history. This document belonged to John Nicolay, President Lincoln's private secretary, and is believed to be the President's reading copy.
The Address was delivered by President Lincoln on November 19, 1863, at a ceremony to dedicate a cemetery for the Union war dead at Gettysburg, the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln was invited "as Chief Executive of the nation, formally (to) set apart these grounds to their sacred use by a few appropriate remarks." The featured speaker was Edward Everett, one of the nation's foremost orators. At the ceremony, Everett spoke for more than two hours; Lincoln spoke for two minutes.
In his address, President Lincoln invoked the Declaration of Independence, and its principles of liberty and equality, and spoke of "a new birth of freedom" for the nation. He continued to reshape the aims of the war for the American people-transforming it from a war for Union to a war for Union and freedom. Although Lincoln expressed disappointment in the speech initially, it has come to be regarded as one of the most elegant and eloquent speeches in U.S. history.
The Emancipation Proclamation, which was most recently displayed at the National Archives in 2001, was voted as the sixth most important document in American history.
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War, formally proclaiming the freedom of all slaves held in areas still in revolt. The issuance of this Proclamation clarified and strengthened the position of the Union government, decreased the likelihood of European support of the Confederacy and, as the Union armies extended their occupation of the southern states, brought freedom to the slaves in those states. The Proclamation invited black men to join the Union Army and Navy, resulting in the enlistment of approximately 200,000 freed slaves and free black people before the War's end.
Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in the nation, it placed the issue squarely on top of the wartime agenda. It added moral force to the Union cause and was a significant milestone leading to the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1865, formally outlawing slavery throughout the nation.
The Emancipation Proclamation linked the preservation of American constitutional government to the end of slavery and has come to take its place with the great documents of freedom.
This national initiative, co-sponsored by the National Archives, National History Day and U.S. News & World Report is part of a larger project created by the National Archives and National History Day in collaboration with USA Freedom Corps, titled Our Documents: A National Initiative on American History, Civics and Service. BBC's Big Read turns libraries into winners
GLASGOW libraries have had a major boost from a TV show which gripped the nation. Across Glasgow and the west of Scotland the BBC's The Big Read has had the public rushing to local libraries.
In recent weeks a host of celebrities have spoken in support of their own favourites and the nation picked its top book on Saturday.
Extra stocks of The Big Read's official top 20 were bought in across Glasgow but demand was so high they ran out of copies of most titles at Langside Library. Catherine McInerney, literature development officer at Glasgow City Council, said: "The Big Read has led to a noticeable increase in visitors to the city's libraries and had got people talking about books again." But while the series ended on Saturday, revealing Tolkien's Lord of the Rings as the nation's favourite, it emerged Glasgow readers had other ideas.
Unveiling the most popular title for Glasgow readers, Ms McInerney said: "To Kill A Mockingbird seems to be the book people have talked about most."
Library bosses running Big Read events around Glasgow over the past few weeks said Harper Lee's tale of racism in the American south was a winner.
The 1960 novel tells the story of eight-year-old Scout Finch, her brother Jem and their lawyer father, Atticus, who defends a black man wrongly accused a raping a white woman.
It was followed by Catch 22, Treasure Island and The Catcher in the Rye. Two Harry Potters made the top 10, as did Alasdair Gray's renowned Lanark.
Professor Willy Maley, of Glasgow University, was delighted the city's readers chose To Kill A Mockingbird.
He said: "It is a total stand-out and was made into a great film with Gregory Peck as Atticus. It's fantastic Lanark is there too - it's the best Glasgow book."

New Campaign On School Libraries
School libraries and those who run them in the UK make a great contribution to literacy, information literacy and academic achievement - it's about time they were celebrated too.
So say the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), the School Library Association (SLA) and the Association of Senior Children's and Educational Librarians (ASCEL) in a campaign, underway this winter, to show what effective, properly resourced and staffed school libraries can achieve in supporting teaching and learning, and improving standards and academic achievement .
Concerned to see budgets for school libraries severely cut as a result of the crisis in school funding over the last year, the three organisations are calling for schools to recognise the value of their library and both fund and use it more effectively.
To celebrate this campaign the education, libraries, literacy and children's books worlds came together at Mount Carmel School in Islington, north London, to enjoy breakfast with Professor Tim Brighouse, Commissioner for London Schools, who received a copy of the booklet School Libraries: Making a Difference (funded by the Department for Education and Skills) in which he is quoted as saying: "My vision of learning for children and young people in the future has the library, in all its forms, at its heart."
Professor Brighouse has been a supporter of school libraries for many years and in his last role as Director of Education for Birmingham was involved in several projects with the local education authority School Library Service, to improve access to books through school libraries.
School libraries are not statutory in the UK, although a 2001 document from the then Department of Education and Employment stated: "At their best school libraries are an invaluable asset to teachers and a source of great enjoyment, and learning, for children. Frequently librarians working in a school are among the most competent staff in terms of ICT and the library is seen as a powerful resource centre for the whole school."
In the United States, First Lady Laura Bush held a summit on school libraries last summer, while recently she and Cherie Blair (wife of the UK Prime Minister), as well as the first ladies of Bulgaria and Armenia, attended a three-day Festival of School Libraries in Moscow. This event, attended by hundreds of school librarians, was not just patronised by but fronted by the Russian President's wife, Ludmila Putina. Each first lady, and Mrs Blair, took two children's authors with them and introduced them to the audience, Cherie Blair taking Michael Morpurgo, multiple award winner and current Children's Laureate and Kevin Crossley Holland, award winning author of the recent Arthur trilogy.

Autonomy Secures Parliamentary Role
Software group Autonomy today unveiled a contract to help develop a new parliamentary information system for MPs and peers.
Cambridge-based Autonomy will provide software to manage the retrieval and delivery of information including debates, briefing papers, legislation and other parliamentary material.
The contribution will form part of the new Parliamentary Information Management Services (PIMS) project, which aims to give faster and broader access to parliamentary information.
PIMS is being developed to replace the Parliamentary Online Indexing Service (POLIS), which has been in operation at the House of Commons and Lords libraries for more than 20 years.
Library research staff send out more than 12,000 written replies to enquiries from members each year, with a further 20,000 enquiries dealt with orally.
PIMS will allow members, peers and their staff to search for and retrieve information directly.
Priscilla Baines, Librarian of the House of Commons, said: “PIMS will be central to how the libraries provide services to members in future.
“We need reliable and accurate information retrieval facilities, and Autonomy will provide that essential assistance automatically.”
The system will also use a content management suite from Autonomy’s US partner Vignette. London-based technology integrator Morse has already been chosen to implement and support the PIMS project.
Analysts estimate the project will be worth around 650,000 US dollars (£450,000) to Autonomy.
The company’s products are used by US intelligence services to help decode terrorists’ e-mails and it has also won new business with drugs giant AstraZenenca, the BBC and the German government in the last six months.
Its activities helped the former FTSE 100 listed company record pre-tax profits of 1.6 million US dollars (£947,000) in the third quarter of 2003, almost doubling last year’s figure. 15/12/2003 Businesswire (go top)

Library of Congress Calls For Personal Remembrances of 9/11
In partnership with the September 11 Digital Archive Project, the Library of Congress is launching a new interactive Web site, "Contribute Your Story," accessible through a link on the Library’s “Witness and Response” online exhibition at http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/911/. Visitors who visit the site can share their recollections of that day by answering questions such as Where were you on September 11, 2001, when you heard the news? and what is your strongest memory of that day? The interactive site also allows visitors to browse through the submissions of other contributors. The impact of the events of September 11, 2001, is still unfolding. The recollections of ordinary Americans during the aftermath will prove invaluable to future generations of researchers attempting to analyze these events and their bearing upon the history of the nation. "Contribute Your Story" offers online visitors the opportunity to submit personal stories, recollections, artwork or e-mail about the effects of September 11 on their lives and how the events have changed the country. Archiving conference concludes. Dubai Municipality concluded the 2nd Conference on Documentation and Electronic Archiving on Tuesday at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The conference, held in co-operation with the Abu Dhabi-based Arab Regional Chapter of the International Council on Archives, under the title: Quick and Accurate Information for a Successful Decision, saw presentation of a total of 18 work papers by experts in the field from different countries. There were participants from Canada, France, Australia, Holland, Switzerland, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, and Tunis, in addition to representatives of Dubai Municipality, Dubai Police and Ras Al Khaimah Municipality. The third day of the conference started with a presentation on the archiving experiences of Dubai Police. Omar Mohammed Miran, Head of Quality Assurance Department in the General Department of E-Services at the Dubai Police Headquarters presented a paper titled, 'Dubai Police Electronic Correspondence System.' It was followed by a presentation by Antoine Fundter, Senior Consultant of Saudi Soft Company titled 'Customer Solutions for Enterprise Content Management with SAPERION at Siemens and Hochtief'. Mohammed Saber Arab, Head of General Board of National Public Library of the Arab Republic of Egypt presented a paper on Digital conversion & Preservation: Experience of Egyptian National Archive, followed by a paper called 'Scanners: Front-End to any document archiving solution' by Graham Johnson, International Sales Manager of Fujitsu-Forefront Technologies. Two workshops were held on the final day of the conference. Dr. Huda Jamal Abdul Nasser, daughter of the former president of Egypt, Jamal Abdul Nasser addressed the first workshop on 'Applications and Practices in the management of active and non-active archive.' She gave a presentation on the activities of the Abdul Nasser Archives in Egypt. In the second workshop Ras Al Khaimah Municipality gave a presentation on the topic, 'Defining the Document and Content Management Ecosystem.' The Russian State Library opens to public an electronic archive of theses
MOSCOW - Internet users very soon will be able to read works of Russian scientists online. The Russian State Library opens to public an electronic archive of theses held starting with year 1994. Project manager Olga Lavrenova says that digital libraries are popular in many countries and theses are very popular among researches as they contain the newest data. The new electronic library faces lack of enthusiasm from Russian scientists themselves, who do not want to make their works accessible to the public, being afraid of plagiarism. In addition, only half of the scientists who agreed to submit their work have an electronic copy of their thesis. Still, Lavrenova hopes to persuade them to include their work into the archive and claims files will be protected from copying and printing. In the meantime, The Electronic Theses Library project includes 28,000 titles. It will add 25,000 each year, as the library has a total of more than 800,000 works. 17/12/2003 Reuters (go top)
Congressional Film Registry Adds 'Butch Cassidy'
LOS ANGELES - The Library of Congress added 25 landmark cinematic works to its National Film Registry on Tuesday, ranging from popular classics like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" to a documentary about giraffe hunting in Africa. This year's selections, bringing to 375 the number of movies added to the registry since it was established in 1989, span nearly 100 years of motion pictures dating back to an 1894 attempt by pioneering film engineer W.K.L. Dickson of the Thomas Edison Company to combine film images with sound. This year's most modern entry was the 1988 animated short "Tin Toy" from Pixar Studios, which went on to revolutionize computer animation with such hits as "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo." The list also includes such obscure but culturally significant works as the 1924 Inuit title "The Chechahcos," the first feature film produced in Alaska; "The Hunters," a 1957 study of a giraffe hunt by Kalahari Desert tribesmen; and a 1928 Fox Movietone newsreel about a group of touring black musicians from South Carolina, the Jenkins Orphanage Band. Better-known works are the 1969 western "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford; Mel Brooks' 1974 horror spoof "Young Frankenstein"; Elizabeth Taylor's 1944 breakout film "National Velvet; James Cagney's 1949 turn as a psychopathic gangster in "White Heat"; George C. Scott's acclaimed performance in the 1970 Oscar winner "Patton"; and the rather steamy pre-Production Code film "Tarzan and His Mate" from 1934. In addition to the prestige of official recognition by the Library of Congress, the national registry is part of a larger effort to preserve historically important films from the ravages of physical deterioration. The Government will soon establish libraries in all prisons in the country. Vice-President Moody Awori said libraries would enable warders and prisoners to advance their education. He made the remarks when he toured Manyani Maximum Prison in Taita Taveta District yesterday. The VP pointed out that warders and inmates were willing to further their education but lacked sufficient materials. Awori also said the Government would ensure that cases were heard on time. Awori was reacting to claims by a prisoner, Mr Francis Suranira, that he appealed eight years ago yet nothing had been done. Suranira had asked the VP to intervene to have his case heard. Awori assured him that all pending appeals would soon be heard. During the tour Awori promoted the Manyani prisons boss Patrick Mwenda to Assistant Commissioner of Prisons. US Libraries Select OverDrive eBook System

Playboy archives sell for $3.7m
AN auction of more than 300 items from the Playboy archives were sold at auction for $US2.7 million ($3.66 million) today, including the magazine's very first centrefold featuring a topless Marilyn Monroe. The sale at Christie's in New York included original manuscripts by such 20th-century literary figures as Jack Kerouac, Ian Fleming, and Ray Bradbury, and a stretch limousine customised for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The Monroe centrefold, from Playboy's 1953 inaugural issue, went for $US17,925 ($24,314), more than double its estimate. An image from nearly 30 years later, an iconic photo of 10 star Bo Derek, taken by her husband, John Derek, for the cover of the March 1980 issue, fetched $US11,950 ($16,209). Congress is set to allocate $500,000 to Beth Medrash Govoha, known as the Lakewood yeshiva, for the establishment of a "Holocaust library."
The grant was included in the 2004 Omnibus Appropriation Conference Agreement that is expected to be signed by President Bush later this month. According to congressional staffers, New Jersey's two senators, Democrats Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg, inserted the money into the bill after being lobbied by Rabbi Aharon Kotler, grandson of the yeshiva's foremost religious leader, Rabbi Aryeh Malkiel Kotler. The allocation comes as attention is focusing on a book written by Rabbi Saadya Grama, a graduate of the yeshiva, arguing that gentiles are "completely evil" and Jews constitute a separate, genetically superior species. The book included endorsements from several of the top rabbis at the Lakewood yeshiva. But this week, Aryeh Malkiel Kotler issued a statement to the Forward saying that he had not read the book "carefully" before endorsing it and objected strongly to its alleged contents (see Page 1). When asked about the book, Lautenberg said in a statement: "If these translations accurately portray the sentiments of Rabbi Grama's book, I find it deeply troubling that any representative of the school would endorse these views." Corzine staffer David Wald would not comment on the book. But, regarding the Holocaust library, he said: "We supported the appropriation... to replace historically-important documents." Which documents would reside in the library is unclear. The request for federal aid sent by Aharon Kotler to the senators requested funds for "Holocaust Memorial Libraries." "Beth Medrash Govoha's Holocaust Memorial Libraries will replace the institution's famous collections of books and manuscripts that were destroyed in the Holocaust," Kotler wrote. "The collections will include the wartime archives of U.S. and European community leaders, and thousands of scholarly works, from the pre-Holocaust, Holocaust, and immediate post-Holocaust eras." Later in the request, Kotler wrote, "Exhibits on the Holocaust and other events from that era will be a prominent activity at the Library/Memorial." Kotler said that he would be willing to discuss the project at a later date, but not the same week that the Forward was writing an article on Grama's book. Binyamin Speigel, the yeshiva's head librarian, said he could not provide details regarding the library. "We don't have a Holocaust library. It's in future plans," he told the Forward. Asked to provide more details, Speigel responded: "We don't have exact plans." Statements from Corzine's and Lautenberg's offices indicate that both believe the library was meant to preserve documents nearly lost in the Holocaust. In a statement from Lautenberg, the senator declared: "I worked to secure federal funding for this library, which will house a large collection of historical documents, books and other artifacts that survived the Holocaust." OpenOffice CDs live for lending in Scottish libraries
OpenOffice CDs are becoming available for lending at 415 out of 507 public libraries in Scotland, and the activist responsible, Bob Kerr, is busily packing up more CDs to send to what he estimates represents around 60 per cent of libraries in the UK as a whole. But it's the process rather than the coup itself that is most interesting - by dint of listening to libraries and trying to understand and solve their problems, Kerr has identified mechanisms and routes that can be used to get Free Software into libraries, and indeed that give it positive advantages over proprietary software in the area. It's not as simple as might first appear, and Kerr has produced a "Everyone is trying to get OpenOffice onto the librarians computers and that is not going to happen whilst Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is supplying millions of pounds to fund them. What the Free Software community can do is start a dialogue and reach out to libraries to solve their problems. We must understand their problems of liability and the amount of money it takes to put something on the shelves." Kerr has surely discovered something of a secret weapon here; Bill Gates might just have a problem with the notion of Microsoft software being shoved into lending libraries with the specific objective of it being copied, so it's an area where proprietary software cannot compete, provided Free Software has gained access to the channel. And it has interesting potential as a 'ground up' distribution process that isn't dependent on first gaining mindshare for Free Software in the mass market. Glasgow Green MSP Patrick Harvie has welcomed the move , and is taking an interest in the top-down side. He says that the Scottish Parliament alone has spent over half a million pounds on Microsoft software, and calls for an OS preference to be built into public procurement policies. To The Register's knowledge there are at least several other MSPs of this frame of mind, so it might just happen in Scotland, one day. Kerr, meanwhile, can't deal with the whole of the UK in the same way he did Scotland, because he doesn't have the resources. In Scotland he was able, over a period of six months, to discuss matters, but this clearly isn't feasible on a larger scale for one person. At the moment, he's mailing 3,500 CDs designed as introductions to Open Source for librarians, but this will clearly need follow-through if it's to succeed. More Tolkien treasures headed to Marquette University archive
MILWAUKEE — Marquette University, which already owns the original manuscript of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," says it is acquiring a major collection of secondary sources about the author. Among the 2,376 items the university is getting from Grace E. Funk, a Canadian collector, are volumes of the Ace edition of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy that introduced many Americans to Tolkien's fantasy epic in the 1960s, along with articles from obscure periodicals, documentaries and out-of-print memorabilia. The Funk acquisition has "tremendous intellectual value," and having it in the Marquette archive will be convenient for Tolkien scholars and enthusiasts, said archivist Matt Blessing. More than 3,000 visitors a year view Marquette's Tolkien archive, one of the two most important in the world. The other is at the Bodleian Library at Oxford, England. Marquette also has the original manuscript for Tolkien's "The Hobbit" plus his hand-drawn book, "Mr. Bliss," and the novella "Farmer Giles of Ham." Funk decided to sell her collection to Marquette after a visit here for the 1999 conference of the Mythopoeic Society, a group that studies the work of Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and similar writers. National Archives Building Has Small Fire
WASHINGTON -- An electrical short circuit sparked a small fire in a storage area at the National Archives building, and about 100 boxes housing records from the 19th century sustained water damage. However, the documents inside the boxes, which are designed to soak up water, were not damaged after the fire late Saturday night, archives spokeswoman Susan Cooper said Sunday. The fire, which broke out in an upper-level storage area, was immediately extinguished by building sprinklers. The incident occurred in a part of the building not open to the public and far from displays of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights. The damaged storage boxes contained land records from the 1800s and pension files for War of 1812 veterans. "The best guess at the moment is that the damage is not significant," Cooper said. Seychelles: National Library gets official day, new logo
December 15 will be recognised as Seychelles National Library Day, the minister for local government announced recently. The declaration by Sylvette Pool, Minister for Local Government, Sports and Culture, came at a dinner dance at Green Valley to commemorate the library’s silver jubilee. The silver jubilee celebrations were also an opportunity for library officials to unveil a new logo, which was chosen from entries into a competition launched in November. Lene Barbe impressed the judges with his logo to earn a cash prize of R2,000. The coordinator of the logo and slogan competition, Christiane Adeline, said that with Barbe's consent, the library decided to modify the logo before it is officially adopted. Ms Adeline also pointed out that the slogan competition did not have a good turnout, and the library plans to launch another one earlier next year when they celebrate a decade since it moved in the new building. During a short ceremony at the dinner dance, there was also a presentation of certificates for 13 library staff members who were honoured for their years of service. Più di seimila voci, altrettante schede biografiche, bibliografia aggiornata ed elenco delle opere: è l’Archivio storico delle donne artiste, realizzato dalla Provincia di Bologna per valorizzare un ambiente - quello bolognese - particolarmente rappresentativo: basti penaare a Lavinia Fontana ed Elisabetta Sirani.
Bologna si valorizza come centro di importanza europea per la storia della creatività femminile e si presta a divenire un punto di riferimento per lo studio delle donne artiste in Europa. Per questo motivo l’assessorato alle Pari opportunità della Provincia, che da anni svolge attività di ricerca e di valorizzazione dell’identità storica femminile, ha gettato le basi dal 1994 per la fondazione di un Archivio storico delle donne artiste attive in Europa dal Medioevo al Novecento che sarà intitolato a Caterina Vigri. Curatrice scientifica dell’Archivio è Vera Fortunati.
Questa mattina a palazzo Malvezzi il presidente della Provincia Vittorio Prodi e il rettore dell’Alma Mater Studiorum Pier Ugo Calzolari hanno sottoscritto un protocollo d’intesa sull’Archivio, teso a implementare, valorizzare e diffondere gli studi sull’identità storico-artistica femminile. Alla firma erano presenti l’assessore provinciale alle Pari opportunità Paola Bottoni e la professoressa Vera Fortunati (nella foto). Canada: Un Archivio Digitale Di File Estinti
L'idea e' decisamente originale. David Goodwin, professore dell'universita' di Waterloo, ha lanciato un progetto per la realizzazione di un archivio destinato a raccogliere immagini, suoni, video e testi attingendo a ogni immaginabile fonte. Biblioteca Guanda: 30 anni di gloria
La biblioteca Ugo Guanda ha compiuto trent'anni. Domani la ormai storica istituzione cittadina sarà in festa: alle 11 operatori e pubblico festeggeranno con un brindisi. Punto di riferimento di generazioni di studenti nonché tempio del sapere per innumerevoli studiosi, la biblioteca Guanda è stata inaugurata il 15 dicembre del '73 alla presenza del sindaco Cesare Gherri nell'ambito del Centro civico, situato nel sottopassaggio di Piazza Garibaldi, ex sala da ballo e bagno pubblico conosciuto come Albergo diurno Cobianchi. Qui trovarono posto le sedi di diverse istituzioni (Università popolare, Arci, Centro rapaci, Get), ma soprattutto la sala conferenza intitolata a Giacomo Ulivi e la biblioteca Ugo Guanda, a cui la famiglia dell'editore scomparso donò un prezioso fondo. La novità della Guanda, che è stata la prima biblioteca «a scaffale aperto», con i libri direttamente e immediatamente accessibili da parte di chiunque, consistevano anche nell'allestimento di una sala ragazzi e nella scelta di acquistare, oltre ai classici e alla letteratura alta, anche la cosiddetta narrativa di evasione o di genere (gialli, rosa, fantascienza). Si rivolgeva infatti ai lettori di tutte le categorie, compresi quindi i lavoratori delle fabbriche e degli uffici. Essa praticava anche il prestito delle opere senza particolari procedure. Nel giugno del 1984 la Guanda si trasferisce nell'attuale sede di vicolo delle Asse, all'interno del complesso di San Paolo, sempre mantenendo e sviluppando nel corso degli anni la sua caratteristica di biblioteca per il tempo libero. Oltre infatti alla sezione della letteratura, colta o d'evasione, ha sempre curato in particolare la sezione dell'artigianato artistico, bricolage e «fai da te», organizzando anche numerosi corsi. Nel contempo ha potuto vantare donazioni importanti come quella della vedova del critico cinematografico Pietrino Bianchi. Chi trova una biblioteca trova un tesoro
I libri sono beni preziosi, in alcuni casi rari, in altri ancora pezzi unici. A volte sono gioielli da indossare. In certi momenti ci appaiono come opere d’arte da gustare in silenzio. Di essi, con tutte le sfaccettature e le interpretazioni possibili, le biblioteche sono i custodi. Possono offrirci perle altrimenti difficilmente reperibili. Ogni biblioteca ha una sua funzione, uno scopo, delle sue caratteristiche. Bellissime - parere di chi scrive – quelle che portano avanti la storia e le tradizioni locali. Limitandoci al ’900 letterario, e lasciando che l’indice scorra attraverso le enormi ricchezze del patrimonio bibliotecario italiano, soffermandosi “a tatto”, dove cade l’occhio, perché non tentare di tracciare alcuni dei molteplici possibili percorsi? Sappiate che potrete avere tra le mani la prima edizione del 1908 de “L’umorismo” di Luigi Pirandello se vi recate alla Biblioteca centrale della Regione Siciliana di Palermo che dal 1878, in base alla legge sul diritto di stampa, riceve tutte le pubblicazioni edite nella provincia di Palermo. Potrete gustare “Napoli milionaria” di Eduardo de Filippo, nell’edizione del 1950 fermandovi alla Biblioteca della Società napoletana di storia patria di Napoli, che documenta la cultura e la storia meridionale, raccoglie le fonti storiche e gli opportuni strumenti per ricerche specializzate. Se siete amanti della romanità potrete consultare l’edizione originale del 1963 del saggio “Il genio del Belli” di Giorgio Vigolo presso la Biblioteca della Fondazione Marco Besso di Roma, che possiede cospicuo materiale sulla storia di Roma. Lo stesso Marco Besso raccolse opere su Roma presso i migliori librai antiquari d'Europa (ma per avere tutto su Vigolo dovete necessariamente recarvi alla Biblioteca nazionale Vittorio Emanuele di Roma dove è conservato il “Fondo Vigolo” costituito da tutto il materiale autografo appartenuto al poeta romano). Presso la Biblioteca Marucelliana di Firenze, specializzata in campo umanistico e artistico, con particolare riguardo alla cultura fiorentina e toscana, potrete rintracciare l’edizione del 1914 dei “Canti Orfici” di Campana. Ma se siete appassionati di questo autore, non potete non passare presso la piccola biblioteca del comune di Marradi, paese natale del poeta, dove si trova anche l’interessante Centro Studi campaniani . Insomma, basta scegliere. Non sarà difficile trovare gli itinerari giusti, da segnare sulla scia dei propri interessi. La Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon s'équipe pour les non-voyants
La BM de la Part-Dieu fut la première en France à utiliser internet. Aujourd'hui elle s'équipe d'un poste informatique et de matériel adapté pour les personnes malvoyantes et non voyantes. « 46 % des Lyonnais pratiquent les Bibliothèques de Lyon pendant l'année. C'est un lieu unique de rencontre de toutes les populations » explique Patrick Bazin Directeur de la Bibliothèque de la Part-Dieu. Fort de ce constat, il aurait été anormal que ce lieu, démocratique par excellence, laisse sur le bord du chemin les personnes mal-voyantes et non-voyantes. L'Espace multimédia de la bibliothèque de la Part-Dieu comble désormais cette lacune. A partir du mois de décembre un poste informatique adapté à ce handicap est désormais dédié à la consultation internet, à la recherche documentaire et à la bureautique. Doté d'un grand écran et d'un clavier spécial avec lettres agrandies, il procure aux personnes âgées ou malvoyantes un meilleur confort d'utilisation des outils informatiques. De plus, un logiciel permet d'agrandir à volonté les images affichées. Pour les personnes non voyantes, une voix de synthèse, programmée à l'aide du logiciel Jaws, lit d'une manière particulièrement étonnante tout ce qui est affiché à l'écran. Un terminal braille permet de suivre tactilement le texte et complète le dispositif. Un scanner et un logiciel de reconnaissance de caractères rend aussi accessible tous les documents imprimés disponibles. Un vaste domaine, quand on sait que l'ensemble des bibliothèques lyonnaise contient plus de 2 millions de documents papier. En 1995, la bibliothèque de la Part-Dieu fut la première à utiliser l'outil internet. Depuis 1999, les 14 bibliothèques lyonnaises qui fonctionnent en réseau sont désormais équipées en accès libre et gratuit. Mais le plus de ces espaces dédiés à l'informatique, c'est aussi l'accompagnement et la formation aux nouvelles techniques de l'information. Sur ce point, le projet destiné aux non-voyants a été particulièrement soigné par l'implication forte de deux emploi-jeunes. La Ville de Lyon, par l'entremise de Sylvie Guillaume adjointe à la Santé et au Handicap a servi aussi de catalyseur pour réunir bibliothèque, associations, et fournisseurs de matériel. Le dispositif qui revient environ à 18 300 euros, a été financé par le Programme lyonnais pour la société de l'information (PLSI) et le matériel fourni par la société Handialog. « Au moment où l'on parle de la fracture numérique mondiale, ce projet à une connotation symbolique forte » commente Patrick Béghain adjoint à la culture et au patrimoine. Le dispositif pourrait prochainement s'étendre à l'ensemble des bibliothèques de la Ville. Mais aussi permettre un accès simplifié à la presse quotidienne. Un nouveau service de prêt pour les personnes handicapées Il existe déjà à la Bibliothèque de Lyon une navette qui permet de rendre les documents empruntés dans la bibliothèque d'arrondissement de son choix. Depuis le 2 décembre, la BM offre la possibilité aux personnes à mobilité réduite (handicapés moteur et visuel) de faire parvenir les documents qu'elles désirent emprunter, dans la bibliothèque qu'elles fréquentent. Pour cela, il suffit de se rendre dans sa bibliothèque habituelle et de présenter sa carte d'invalidité. La ministre de la culture annonce les Prix d'excellence des bibliothèques publiques de Canada
TORONTO, le 15 déc. - Les bibliothèques publiques des Premières nations d'Alderville, d'Ottawa, de Peterborough, de St. Catharines, de St. Mary et de Windsor ont été nommées aujourd'hui lauréates des Prix d'excellence des bibliothèques publiques 2003 en Ontario par la ministre de la Culture, Madeleine Meilleur, à l'occasion d'une réunion des représentants du milieu bibliothécaire venus de toute la province, à la Toronto Reference Library. "Ces projets intéressants illustrent l'éventail de possibilités qu'il nous faut explorer pour une meilleure qualité de vie en Ontario", a déclaré Mme Meilleur. "En investissant dans nos bibliothèques publiques, nous renforçons les communautés, nous contribuons à la vitalité sociale de la province, nous stimulons sa croissance et nous favorisons l'alphabétisation et l'apprentissage continu." Créés par le gouvernement de l'Ontario en 1985 afin de dévoiler et de promouvoir de nouvelles idées de services dans le milieu des bibliothèques publiques, les Prix d'excellence des bibliothèques publiques mettent en vedette des catégories de petites et grandes bibliothèques et deux prix distincts. Un jury, composé de personnes issues du milieu des bibliothèques publiques, a passé en revue 34 candidatures qui venaient de toute la province. Le Prix de la ministre pour l'innovation récompense de nouveaux concepts et de nouvelles méthodes encore inédits dans les bibliothèques publiques, couronnés de succès et précieux pour le développement des bibliothèques publiques. Les deux prix de la catégorie grandes bibliothèques ont été décernés aux bibliothèques suivantes : la bibliothèque publique d'Ottawa, pour sa navette qui transporte les usagers jusqu'à la bibliothèque et la bibliothèque publique de Peterborough, pour son bureau "TEKdesk" qui offre un soutien technique informatique à toutes les bibliothèques de la province. Celle de St. Mary a remporté le prix de la catégorie petite bibliothèque pour son café du Philosophe. Le Prix d'excellence Angus Mowat récompense un engagement à exceller dans la prestation de services de bibliothèques tout en faisant preuve d'une nouvelle méthode ou application. Cette semaine a été établie pour favoriser la promotion des services et des ressources des bibliothèques dans les communautés des Premières nations au moyen d'activités et de programmes spéciaux. L'honorable James K. Bartleman, le premier Autochtone à occuper les fonctions de lieutenant-gouverneur de l'Ontario, et le ministre de la Culture ont assisté au lancement. Le lancement a captivé l'intérêt des médias à l'échelle nationale et locale. Le lancement de la Semaine des bibliothèques des Premières nations de 2003 a certainement été le premier à avoir une telle ampleur et un tel impact. Catégorie Grands bibliothèques Prix du ministre pour l'innovation - Bibliothèque publique d'Ottawa - Le projet "Navette biblio/Library Shuttle" de la bibliothèque abolit les obstacles à l'accessibilité pour les non-usagers en transportant les jeunes enfants et leurs familles aux succursales de la bibliothèque dans une fourgonnette aux couleurs vives. La réussite du programme a permis de faire connaître le merveilleux monde des bibliothèques publiques à plus de 300 parents et enfants depuis son lancement en 2002. Qu'elle accueille des néo-Canadiens ou des familles à faible revenu, la Navette biblio a aidé des parents et des enfants à faire les premiers pas sur la route de l'acquisition continue du savoir à la bibliothèque publique. - Bibliothèque publique de Peterborough - La bibliothèque publique de Peterborough, en partenariat avec le Community Opportunity and Innovation Network, a mis en oeuvre la première étape du projet "24by7 TEKdesk". TEKdesk offre aux bibliothèques publiques de toute la province un soutien technique pour résoudre leurs problèmes de matériel informatique, de logiciel et de réseautage. Le projet offre actuellement aux bibliothèques un soutien en direct du lundi au samedi. Son site Web (www.24by7.ca) offre un soutien virtuel illimité au moyen de conseils techniques, de formulaires, de tutoriels et d'articles variés. Prix d'excellence Angus Mowat - Bibliothèque publique de St. Catharines - La bibliothèque publique de St. Catharines a mis sur pied un programme visant à donner aux élèves de 8e année les habiletés de recherche qui leur seront d'une aide inappréciable au cours de leurs études secondaires. Ce programme est divisé en segments qui offrent des activités pratiques pour orienter la recherche, que ce soit à l'aide de l'ordinateur ou dans les ouvrages de référence imprimés. Le programme permet aux élèves d'acquérir la méthodologie qui les aidera à effectuer des recherches pour n'importe quel travail scolaire. La bibliothèque a offert ce programme à 28 reprises et 952 élèves y ont participé. - Bibliothèque publique de Windsor - Ce projet réinvente la façon dont les bibliothèques offrent leurs services aux enfants, en particulier les enfants de moins de 6 ans. Le projet Children's Learning Centre occupe 6 000 pieds carrés à la bibliothèque centrale. Le Centre souligne l'importance de veiller au développement global de l'enfant dans le contexte de sa famille et de sa collectivité. Archives judiciaires : La mémoire de la justice en danger
Les récits d’actions et d’événements passés ou futurs ne peuvent se faire par les générations qu’à travers les archives. C’est ainsi que «les archives judiciaires, sciences sociales et démocratie» font l’objet d’un colloque international qui se tient à Dakar les 15, 16 et 17 décembre courant. Et, plusieurs thèmes sont abordés dans ce sens. L’anecdote est succulente. Elle est à la fois pleine d’humour et d’enseignements. Et, Aminata Ly Ndiaye de la Cour d’appel de Dakar qui la raconte se veut très au sérieux : «Il y a eu, une situation rocambolesque au tribunal régional de Diourbel où l’on signale la présence d’un serpent dans les locaux qui abritent les archives. Tout à l’heure, à la pause dans le hall, quelqu’un m’a demandé des nouvelles de notre ami le serpent. J’avais réservé ma réponse à l’assistance, quand j’aborderai le thème de la prise en charge des archives judiciaires : le serpent en question se porte comme un charme et aux dernières nouvelles il aurait même des petits. Et ma foi, inutile de vous dire que personne ne s’aventure dans ces locaux ni pour accéder aux archives et encore moins pour les dépoussiérer.» Cette anecdote est révélatrice de l’état des archives judiciaires au Sénégal dont Saliou Mbaye, le directeur des archives nationales dit que l’état de conservation est très mauvais. Dans son étude de l’état des archives judiciaires, le juge Aminata Ly Ndiaye s’est basé sur les rapports élaborés par deux missions d’archivistes qui se sont rendues en juillet 1999 et juillet 2000 dans les dix régions du Sénégal pour les archives de l’ensemble des juridictions. «Il s’est agi pour ces archivistes, de faire le point de la situation des archives judiciaires au niveau de chacune des localités afin d’en présenter une vision d’ensemble, nécessaire à la définition d’une bonne politique en matière d’exécution des archives judiciaires. Pour cela, les missions ont utilisé un certain nombre de paramètres comme l’état de conservation des archives, l’état de classement, les pourcentages des dossiers classés, les pourcentages des dossiers détériorés, la surcharge des locaux alloués aux archives, le mobilier utilisé, le personnel affecté aux archives», indique Mme Ndiaye. Le tableau qu’elle dresse après est sombre : en dehors des juridictions supérieures que sont la Cour d’Appel de Dakar et la Cour de Cassation, le tableau d’ensemble de la situation des archives judiciaires n’est pas sans doute luisant. La situation est généralement qualifiée de mauvaise. Par ailleurs, signale Aminata Ly Ndiaye, dans les juridictions, l’accès menant aux archives est imprudent ; les locaux sont trop petits et pas assez conditionnés et rien que cette situation conduit à des violations graves de la loi. Comme lorsque les registres d’état-civil, faute de place ne sont plus reçus et conservés, et cette situation dure depuis dix ans maintenant. «Quant au matériel de rangement qu’on emploie, il est insuffisant et de toute façon inadapté, les rayonnages mécaniques sont rares or ils constituent le meilleur outil de rangement, le plus souvent d’ailleurs les dossiers sont entreposés dans des caisses en carton, dans des malles», poursuit-elle. Elle cite les cas de Dakar où, au palais de justice de Dakar, un container qui trône dans la cour fait office d’archives, au Cap Manuel, les archives judiciaires sont menacées de disparition du fait de la proximité avec la mer et des locaux désaffectés ; Ziguinchor, région pluvieuse à souhait où l’étanchéité des bureaux d’archives n’est malheureusement pas garantie. Partout dans les autres archives, la poussière est omniprésente, l’entretien fait défaut. Résultat : la détérioration des documents d’archives qui est de 30 % à Kaolack, 80 % au tribunal régional et au tribunal départemental de Saint-Louis, à Dakar on signale la détérioration de 60 % des documents conservés au Palais de justice du Cap Manuel. Le problème ne se limite pas seulement à la conservation. Le personnel est insuffisant et peu qualifié pour la tâche, la plupart du temps ce sont des greffiers, secrétaires, agents bénévoles officiant au niveau des juridictions. Certains d’entre eux ont reçu une formation dans le tas en archives, mais dans certaines juridictions, il n’y a pas du tout d’agents pour s’occuper des archives. C’est qu’aussi, il y a des anomalies dans les textes régissant les archives judiciaires. S’y ajoute la méconnaissance de la notion d’archive judiciaire et les difficultés d’accès à l’information judiciaire. «Bien souvent quand on pense aux archives judiciaires, on pense d’abord aux archives des tribunaux, or c’est une notion qui va bien au-delà des archives du tribunaux. Tout ce qui est relatif aux archives notamment de l’état civil, aux archives des notaires, aux archives de l’administration pénitentiaire et aux archives mêmes des tribunaux spéciaux. C’est très vaste et l’accès est toujours difficile. C’est aussi la question la plus difficile que connaissent les archivistes», explique le directeur des archives nationales». Seulement, souligne M. Mbaye, il faut faire très attention puisqu’il s’agit d’archives très sensibles dans lesquelles sont citées des personnes et à chaque fois que des personnes sont citées, il faut songer à préserver leur honneur propre et l’honneur de leur famille. Mais cette question d’accès me paraît importante et c’est dans ce sens qu’un projet de loi est à l’étude pour réduire les délais impartis pour que les Sénégalais puissent davantage et plus simplement avoir accès aux informations judiciaires. Toutes choses qui font mesurer à Saliou Mbaye, l’importance du colloque pour sensibiliser l’ensemble des autorités sur ce que recèlent ces archives, «leur importance pour qu’on se rende bien compte que, c’est la mémoire nationale, cette mémoire nationale, il faut la sauvegarder pour éviter que notre peuple devienne amnésique». Dans le même sillage, Aminata Ly Ndiaye recommande de relever le défi majeur de la prise de conscience et de la mise en œuvre d’un train de mesure pour sauver ces archives. Une somme de documents cumulés depuis 1822 jusqu’à maintenant qui nous donne l’exacte mesure de notre société, de l’état de notre société, selon M. Mbaye. Et M. Ndiaye d’ajouter que les archives judiciaires permettent de saisir la jurisprudence des cours et tribunaux. Et les répertoires de jurisprudence que les juristes francophones ont l’habitude d’utiliser ne sont rien d’autres que des archives judiciaires soigneusement conservées et rassemblées. Selon Mme Ndiaye, «les archives judiciaires gardent l’histoire mais aussi la sociologie. Car les missions de la justice sont par excellence le reflet de la vie qu’ont fait les précurseurs de l’humain». De sorte que le chercheur, qu’il soit sociologue, journaliste ou étudiant, peut toujours étudier les phénomènes de société. «Malheureusement cette importance des archives judiciaires est dans une inadéquation flagrante avec le traitement qui leur est fait», conclut Mme Ndiaye. 17/12/2003 Arabic News (go top)
Center for women information, studies and documentation created in Morocco
Yasmina Baddou, Morocco's state secretary in charge of family, solidarity and social action, launched Monday construction works of the Moroccan Center for Women Information, Studies and documentation, part of efforts to "support human development and social integration." In a speech she gave at the opening of a seminar on the beginning of the second phase of the MEDA project, Baddou said the creation of this center coincides with the launching of reforms in various fields in Morocco, particularly in matters concerning family. She also recalled the family code reform announced by HM king Mohammed VI on the opening of the parliamentary session. Baddou told MAP that "the new institution will facilitate decision making in different matters related to women and will contribute to the integration of the culture of equality between the two sexes." She added that "the center is a scientific instrument that will help women and support the action of governmental and non governmental organizations in the field. The institution will ensure training of the concerned departments' employees, provide documentation and conduct studies, she went on." Olivier Ruyssen, in charge of the European Commission interior affairs in Rabat, said the creation of the center is part of a governmental strategy to improve women's condition in Morocco, underlining "the context is favorable" for launching the MEDA project. The 1.72 million Euro project is part of the Morocco-EU financial and technical cooperation scheme. It will extend over a period of two years, from July 2003 until July 2005, and will be financed by the European Commission. Plus de 2,7 millions de dollars d'archives de Playboy vendus chez Christie's
Plus de 300 pièces d'archives de Playboy ont été adjugées mercredi pour un total de 2,75 millions de dollars chez Christie's à New York, et notamment pour 17.925 dollars le portrait original de Marilyn Monroe qui illustrait le tout premier numéro. Cette vente, destinée à célébrer les 50 ans du mensuel de charme, né en décembre 1953 à Chicago, comprenait des photos, illustrations, manuscrits originaux d'auteurs célèbres. Une nouvelle de 33 pages de Jack Kerouac, raturée et corrigée à la main, estimée entre 20.000 et 30.000 dollars, a été cédée 71.700 dollars à un Européen anonyme. Parmi ces archives figuraient aussi le manuscrit du premier James Bond, publié en 1963 dans Playboy, ainsi que des courriers échangés avec des célébrités interviewées pour le mensuel, telles Salvador Dali, Henry Miller, Jean-Paul Sartre, Bob Dylan ou les Beatles. Plus de 70 photos ont également été mises en vente, dont des portraits de Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Madonna, Cindy Crawford. Le premier encart central paru dans le premier numéro, une photo couleur de 1953 de Marilyn Monroe par Tom Kelley, a été vendu 17.925 dollars. Un cliché de Bo Derek, pris par son mari John pour la couverture de mars 1980, a été adjugé 11.950 dollars. Des travaux de photographes de mode aussi célèbres qu'Helmut Newton ou Herb Ritts se sont aussi bien vendus, selon Christie's, notamment deux photos de 1994 d'Elle Macpherson par Ritts atteignant 11.352 dollars chacune. Le dernier lot était une Mercedes Benz 560 SEL de 1988, transformée en limousine pour le fondateur de Playboy, Hugh Hefner. Elle été vendue 77.675 dollars à un particulier américain. La première bibliothèque chorale virtuelle du monde
La banque de données Musica, créée à Strasbourg, fusionne avec l'américain ChoralNet pour créer la plus importante bibliothèque virtuelle du répertoire de chant choral au monde. Créée en 1998 au Kleebach, à Munster, l'association Musica International gère, depuis, la vaste banque de données sur le répertoire de chant choral constituée d'abord sur minitel à partir de 1990, puis sur Internet, à partir de 1997. Chaque ensemble vocal peut y trouver suggestions et renseignements, selon de nombreux critères, pour nourrir et faire évoluer son répertoire. Pour Musica (à ne pas confondre avec le festival de musique éponyme), travaille à Strasbourg une petite équipe autour de Jean Sturm, directeur exécutif de l'association, grâce, notamment, au soutien des collectivités locales. Musica franchit une nouvelle étape. Elle vient de fusionner sa banque de données avec sa principale homologue anglo-saxonne, gérée par ChoralNet. Désormais, l'accès à l'un des deux sites ouvrira l'ensemble des titres des deux collections, dont les doublons ont été petit à petit éliminés. La nouvelle « bibliothèque chorale virtuelle Musica » est ainsi accessible, en quatre langues, par les deux adresses ou . La décision avait été prise par les deux associations en mai dernier. Elle est devenue effective sur le Net fin novembre. Cette fusion fait de la « bibliothèque chorale virtuelle Musica » la plus complète sur la planète virtuelle : elle compte 136 000 titres d'oeuvres - classées notamment selon les possibilités vocales d'une chorale -, 26 000 de compositeurs, 11 000 d'auteurs de textes et 1 800 d'éditeurs. L'OMT lance une bibliothèque virtuelle
L'Organisation mondiale du tourisme a lancé une bibliothèque virtuelle grâce à une base de données entièrement indexée et consultable par références croisées, comprenant la version intégrale de plus de 250 ouvrages publiés par l'OMT. Elle est accessible gratuitement aux 142 États membres de l'Organisation. Des abonnements au prix variable sont offerts aux Membres affiliés, aux bibliothèques et aux particuliers, précise un communiqué. "Ce produit a été créé par Ingenta, principale entreprise du marché mondial dans les domaines de la publication, de la distribution et du lectorat en ligne des travaux de recherche d'universitaires et de professionnels. "Dès leur parution, les nouvelles publications et les nouveaux documents de l'OMT seront diffusés par l'intermédiaire de la bibliothèque virtuelle, très souvent avant d'être mis à la disposition du grand public. Accès permanent et sans restrictions, aux publications et documents La bibliothèque virtuelle comprend aussi une rubrique appelée " Les faits du tourisme ", outil de recherche permettant d'avoir accès aux statistiques les plus à jour par pays ou par région. La Consejería de Cultura comunicó el pasado viernes al Ayuntamiento de Puente Genil la concesión de 420.708,50 euros para subvencionar las obras y adaptación de la nueva biblioteca municipal que se está construyendo en el céntrico parque de los Pinos. El proyecto básico de esta obra de gran calado local supera 1.360.000 euros y desde instancias locales se confiaba en que la subvención de la Junta de Andalucía llegase a la mitad de la inversión total. Desde que comenzaron las obras, hace aproximadamente un año, los únicos fondos empleados han sido provenientes del Ayuntamiento, que diseñó un plan plurianual de amortización.
El alcalde de Puente Genil, Manuel Baena, ha agradecido a través de una nota de prensa la participación económica de la Junta, aunque lamenta que "esa financiación no haya llegado al 50 por ciento de la inversión total, como mínimo, teniendo en cuenta que la Junta de Andalucía ha venido anunciando un importante plan de fomento de la cultura y apoyo a las bibliotecas".
Asimismo, Baena agradece la cantidad prometida por la Diputación --en torno a 72.000 euros--, aunque insiste en que "continúa sin llegar al 50 por ciento de la inversión total". Con estos nuevos datos, el Ayuntamiento se ve forzado a aportar unos 870.000 euros, una cantidad sensiblemente mayor a la que se había previsto.
Esta nueva biblioteca sustituye a una reducida sala de lectura ubicada en la avenida Susana Benítez --La Matallana--, que es insuficiente a todas luces para las necesidades de la población. El nuevo edificio contará con un recinto de más 1.600 metros cuadrados. La biblioteca ocupará 665 metros cuadrados en dos plantas más semisótano y contará con salón de actos, sala de exposiciones y una dependencia de informática que incluye acceso a internet, entre otros servicios. Palencia: El Centro de Estudios de la Ruta Jacobea alberga ya más de 5.000 libros. Se trata de fondos documentales y bibliográficos sobre temática del Camino de Santiago
El Centro de Estudios y Documentación del Camino de Santiago se puso en marcha en junio de 2002 y cuenta con más de 3.000 obras exclusivas sobre la Ruta del Apóstol. Había historia, mito y leyenda pero faltaba un espacio donde los sabios pudieran ahondar en sus conocimientos sobre el recorrido más popular de la Ruta Jacobea, el Camino francés.
El trayecto milenario, que en 2004 vestirá sus mejores galas, incorpora como novedad la posibilidad de consultar un fondo documental y bibliográfico que alberga más de 2.000 títulos catalogados de distintos autores y más de 3.000 publicaciones de temática exclusivamente Jacobea.
La Asociación de Amigos del Camino de Santiago de Palencia puso en marcha en junio de 2002 el Centro de Estudios y Documentación del Camino de Santiago con el fin de reunir y ampliar los contenidos e información existente hasta ese momento.
El Real Monasterio de San Zoilo de Carrión de los Condes «acoge algo así como una biblioteca especializada y pública que se instala al alcance de todos y de forma continuada en el tiempo para recoger una idea largamente planteada por la Federación Nacional de Asociaciones de Amigos del Camino de Santiago», señala su director, Ángel Luis Barreda.
El Centro se ha convertido en poco más de tres años y medio en un referente para los estudiosos del Camino de Santiago «que cada vez con más asiduidad consultan sus fondos bibliográficos», apunta Barreda, quien señala además que el verano pasado «la producción de una serie documental de una televisión japonesa se realizó íntegramente desde aquí».
Situación estratégica. El germen del centro documental de Carrión se fraguó a raíz del éxito cosechado por la exposición bibliográfica que recorrió España bajo la denominación Camino de Santiago. Mil años de Historia... Mil libros para conocerla, una muestra que fue visitada por más de 100.000 personas y que fue la antesala de la creación de la primera biblioteca especializada en la Ruta Jacobea, situada en el centro geográfico del Camino Francés a 350 kilómetros de Roncesvalles y 400 de Santiago de Compostela.
«Son más de 3.000 libros, publicaciones, recortes de prensa de los últimos diez años y revistas especializadas de todas las asociaciones europeas de amigos del Camino de Santiago dedicados a la temática Jacobea y los visitantes vienen tanto a leer como a estudiar», asevera el director del centro de documentación ubicado en Carrión de los Condes.
«Hemos firmado un convenio con la Universidad de Valladolid por el que varios estudiantes nos ayudan a traducir al castellano los artículos que aparecen en revistas internacionales, lo que ha contribuido a mejorar una instalación donde además contamos con discos compactos de música relacionada con el Camino de Santiago», manifiesta Barreda.
Parece claro que el futuro de esta iniciativa está asegurado y, dado el gran interés que ha levantado entre los estudiosos del Camino de Santiago, es muy probable que en muy poco tiempo sea también un punto de referencia más allá de las fronteras de España, ya que la cultura, al igual que el mensaje Jacobeo, son universales. 16/12/2003 Mediterráneo (go top)
La Biblioteca Municipal de Villarreal (Castellón) se abre a la Comunidad Valenciana. 40.000 libros y los fondos audiovisuales locales ya están en la red autonómica
Los fondos bibliográficos y audiovisuales de que dispone la Biblioteca Municipal de Vila-real ya forman parte de la Xarxa de Lectura Pública Valenciana, después que se haya completado la inclusión de más de 40.000 obras en el catálogo colectivo que gestiona la Dirección General del Libro, Archivos y Bibliotecas dependiente de la Conselleria de Cultura y Educación. El concejal delegado del área, Juan José Rubert, mostró su satisfacción porque "el proceso de fusión con esta red se ha adelantado mucho". El proceso de finalización de las tareas, que incluye la renovación de todos los carnets de socios, se completará a finales de marzo, unos meses antes del plazo previsto. El 12 de enero es la fecha en que entra en funcionamiento el nuevo programa. A partir de entonces, los usuarios de los Servicios Bibliotecarios de Vila-real podrán acceder a más de dos millones de volúmenes bibliográficos y audiovisuales repartidos en toda la Comunidad Valenciana. El director de la biblioteca local, Joan Bernat, indicó que unos 12.000 de los 40.000 ejemplares de Vila-real se incorporan como nuevas entradas a la Xarxa de Lectura Pública Valenciana. El edil Rubert asegura que la fusión con la red autonómica "beneficiará a todos los usuarios"1. Argentina: robaron y rompieron inventarios de la Biblioteca Nacional
Un inventario de los muebles y útiles de la Biblioteca Nacional -incluidos sus tres millones de libros-, que iba a ser entregado mañana al Ministerio de Economía, fue en parte sustraído y destruido por desconocidos, denunció el director Horacio Salas. Salas, en declaraciones, sostuvo que el robo y ataque a los archivos 'zip' anoche del inventario de la Biblioteca puede atribuirse a que "tocamos algunos intereses", ya que, dijo, se tomaron "meses de arduo trabajo, y los que lo hicieron sabían lo que querían porque fueron a buscar un material específico". A pesar de los archivos robados y cortajeados, el personal se aseguró una copia por lo que podrá ser entregado mañana. El director dijo que, al conocerse el ataque, inmediatamente se hizo "la denuncia a la comisaría 19 y una presentación a la Justicia Penal". Además, se inició un sumario interno, aunque aclaró que "no estoy acusando a un trabajador en especial". Salas evaluó que los atacantes "tuvieron que poner una tarima y saltar una pared" para ingresar al tercer piso en donde está el sector de Patrimonio del edificio de Agüero y Las Heras. Parque Goya será la sede del Archivo de Aragón en el 2006
La aparición de restos históricos de época islámica "de importancia excepcional" en el antiguo cuartel de Pontoneros situado en la calle Madre Rafols ha provocado un cambio de planes del Gobierno de Aragón. El solar que iba a albergar el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Zaragoza y General de Aragón continuará siendo excavado, mientras que la ubicación del centro se ha trasladado a una parcela de 32.000 metros cuadrados situada en la margen izquierda, en la urbanización Parque Goya. Así lo explicó ayer el director general de Patrimonio Cultural, Jaime Vicente, que aseguró que "la conservación de los restos es incompatible con la construcción del edificio". El ejecutivo autonómico prevé que el nuevo edificio, que aglutinará el Archivo General de Aragón y el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Zaragoza --ahora en el Palacio de Huarte--, se ubique en un "edificio emblemático" dotado con todos los avances tecnológicos. "Este lugar tiene las condiciones idóneas en cuanto a accesibilidad, comunicaciones (esta situado junto a la autovía) y permite añadirle nuevos edificios cuando sea necesario", indicó Vicente. En este sentido, el director general de Patrimonio Cultural también se refirió a la construcción del archivo en la margen izquierda como un factor "equilibrador" de la ciudad. "Es una oportunidad única para diseñar un edificio modelo, símbolo de la arquitectura contemporánea", añadió. La construcción del centro correrá a cargo del Gobierno central, titular del archivo, que se encuentra en conversaciones con el ejecutivo autonómico para iniciar los trámites de adjudicación. Nueve mil metros de legajos en el Archivo Histórico de Sevilla
Casi tres mil personas consultaron el Archivo Histórico de Sevilla, donde se guarda en cajas de documentos ahora apiladas por los pasillos la memoria histórica de la ciudad desde el XVIII Cajas de documentos apiladas por los pasillos para nueve mil metros lineales de documentos y una fundada sensación de falta de espacio parecen indicar que el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla se está quedando pequeño y que la conveniencia o necesidad, según el caso, de que haya que acometer alguna obra de ampliación que permita una mejor ordenación y custodia del valiosísimo material que guarda este edificio llegará antes que tarde. Un total de 2.939 personas, desde enero hasta noviembre de 2003, incluido este último, consultaron el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla, cifra que supone un incremento de más de quinientas personas respecto a años anteriores. Según informó ayer en rueda de prensa la delegada provincial de Cultura, María Isabel Montaño, este archivo «constituye la memoria escrita de la sociedad sevillana desde el siglo XVIII», y añadió que «son 9.000 metros lineales de legajo, lo que supone un trabajo continúo por parte del grupo técnico encargado». Montaño expuso los principales datos del año, entre los que destacó «los 23 préstamos administrativos, las 113 consultas internas, los 222 usos de la biblioteca auxiliar, los 7.113 documentos servidos en las salas o los 8.078 documentos microfilmados». En cuanto al edificio donde se ubica el Archivo, la delegada provincial de Cultura explicó que «por el momento se está haciendo lo posible por adecuarlo, ya que se ha acristalado y acondicionado zonas para que se puedan conservar bien los documentos o el doble acristalamiento de las ventanas que dan a Almirante Apodaca, porque el ruido molestaba a los investigadores». «Si aumenta el número de usuarios, hay que pensar en ampliaciones, o bien alquilando locales para el almacenamiento o bien buscando otro edificio, pero eso aún es un deseo», añadió María Isabel Montaño. Por su parte, la directora del Archivo Histórico Provincial, María Isabel Simó, explicó sus principales funciones, destacando «reunir, conservar y servir documentos». Simó destacó la importancia de los documentos para el gran número de investigadores que se acercan al Archivo y señaló el importante papel de algunos de estos documentos en exposiciones tanto provinciales, como autonómicas y nacionales. Iniciado el primer censo de archivos privados de Sevilla
El Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla acaba de iniciar un ambicioso proyecto: la elaboración del primer censo de archivos privados de la ciudad. La iniciativa, que surge con los beneplácitos del Ministerio de Cultura -titular del archivo- y la Consejería de Cultura de la Junta -de la que depende su gestión-, está en su fase inicial, es decir, se está realizando un listado -que supera los 200 archivos- y una profesional contratada a tal efecto se está dedicando a sondear el estado de la documentación a fin de tener constancia de su existencia y, sobre todo, de su protección. La directora del Histórico Provincia, María Isabel Simó, que ayer realizó, junto a la delegada provincial de Cultura, María Isabel Montaño, un balance de los servicios y actividades prestados durante 2003, avanzó que se ha rastreado la pista de varias relojerías, farmacias, ferreterías... centenarias y cuya documentación, por ley, se considera "patrimonio documental", razón que justifica la puesta en marcha de un proyecto de este calado "que no tiene más objeto que el de saber lo que hay para evitar que se pierda". En este sentido, Simó, que pidió la cooperación de los interesados, recordó que en caso de que los tenedores de la documentación "no sepan qué hacer con la misma, pueden donarla al archivo". Tal ha sido el caso del archivo de la Fábrica de Vidrio de la Trinidad. La parte tocante a la Iglesia se abordará previa firma de un convenio con la autoridad eclesiástica, llave que dará acceso a los archivos parroquiales, de hermandades, de conventos... En cuanto al balance del Archivo Histórico Provincial, aunque se constata un notable incremento en el número de usuarios (2.939 se estiman este año por los 2.525 de 2002 o los escasos 1.465 de 2000) y un paulatino conocimiento de la población de su existencia -gracias a exposiciones y visitas guiadas, empeños debidos a su escaso pero voluntarioso personal-, siguen latiendo varios problemas de fondo. Uno de ellos se refiere al conflicto soterrado que Ministerio y Junta mantienen con el Colegio de Notarios, que pese a tener suscrito un convenio que estipula que los protocolos notariales de más de un siglo de antigüedad deben pasar a ser custodiados por el personal del Histórico Provincial, incumplen los notarios en la práctica. "Es cierto -explicó Simó- que han reacondicionado su archivo en la calle Feria, pero no lo es menos que los investigadores se quejan porque no hay un horario fijo de apertura ni personal que atienda". Y alentó a los perjudicados a que "reclamen" a los notarios, que custodian documentación relevante desde final del XIX. El otro problema de fondo es el del espacio. La directora del archivo reconoció que llevan años colapsados -el edificio, en origen unos juzgados, está declarado BIC, lo que impide una reconversión global que permita reaprovechar sus generosos espacios decorativos-. La delegada provincial de Cultura reconoció que las administraciones están al corriente de la demanda, pero dijo que el traslado a otro edificio no se contempla "a corto ni medio plazo; hoy día, la ampliación no es más que un deseo", aclaró. Guadalajara: El Infantado despedirá a la Biblioteca el próximo 30 de diciembre
La Biblioteca Municipal dejará el Palacio del Infantado tras más de 30 años ocupando este emblemático edificio. El traslado a otro palacio, el de Dávalos, obligará a cerrar la entrada al público durante tres meses a partir del próximo lunes, 30 de diciembre. Para compensar a los lectores por estos tres meses, la Biblioteca permitirá hasta ese mismo día a sus usuarios tomar prestados hasta 20 libros por persona. Las obras de la nueva Biblioteca han supuesto la reconstrucción total del antiguo palacio de Dávalos. La apertura de la nueva Biblioteca en el Palacio de Dávalos está prevista para el próximo mes de marzo, aunque no se haya decidido todavía una fecha concreta. Antes habrá que efectuar el traslado de los libros y el resto de material desde el Infantado a la nueva sede, que ya está prácticamente equipada, según ha explicado la directora de la Biblioteca. Blanca Calvo ha confirmado que esa operación concluirá con una simbólica cadena humana entre el Infantado y Dávalos que permitirá trasladar 1.001 libros. "No sabemos si será la víspera o el mismo día de la inauguración, pero sí queremos que la gente nos ayude a elegir qué libros hay que trasladar y para ello vamos a lanzar una campaña". Una vez abierta, la nueva sede incorporará algunas mejoras que facilitarán de forma considerable el funcionamiento a los usuarios. Mejoras en la distribución del material, el etiquetado del mismo y la forma de préstamo y devolución serán algunas de las novedades, pero también se están estudiando otras como la implantación de un carné que permita acceder a cualquier biblioteca de la región. Algeciras: Rechazan informatizar los archivos notariales
La dirección de la asociación por la defensa del patrimonio algecireño 'La Trocha' ha acusado a los responsables de la Fundación Municipal de Cultura 'José Luis Cano' de obviar una propuesta de la entidad que significaría una donación efectiva de 106.000 euros para la puesta al día del Archivo de Protocolos Notariales. El presidente de la asociación, Manuel Correro, asegura que la Fundación no ha mostrado el más mínimo interés por el proyecto, que permitiría la informatización de los archivos sin coste alguno para las arcas municipales. "Hace un mes que formalizamos la propuesta y no sólo no hemos recibido respuesta sino que, además, se nos ha dado a entender que no interesa", lamentaba ayer Correro. El proyecto de informatización de los archivos fue una iniciativa promovida por La Trocha cuya directiva consiguió recabar el apoyo financiero de un grupo de empresas interesadas en el proyecto. La asociación estimó el costo del proyecto en unos 106.000 euros, 6.000 de ellos invertidos en una primera fase para la informatización del inventario del Archivo y el resto, en una segunda, para informatizar los archivos propiamente dichos. "Nuestro temor es que, ante la renuencia de la Fundación, las empresas se echen para atrás -advirtió el presidente de La Trocha- ¿Tanto dinero tiene la Fundación como para rechazar una propuesta como ésta?". La Trocha nunca ha ocultado su interés por la creación de una Delegación Municipal de Archivos, dotada de un equipo técnico y humano necesario para poner en marcha los fondos y gestionarlos en el futuro. Biblioteca de la Universidad del Mar es depositaria de libros de la Organización Mundial del Turismo
El convenio permite adquirir textos de la especialidad con un descuento de un 50%, con la obligación de mantenerlos a disposición de los alumnos del plantel y académicos de todas las sedes y de otras instituciones. La biblioteca de la Universidad del Mar obtuvo recientemente la categoría de Depositaria de la Biblioteca de la Organización Mundial de Turismo, OMT, lo cual en la práctica significa la posibilidad de adquirir textos relacionados con la especialidad con un descuento de un 50% sobre el precio de venta de las publicaciones, con la obligación de mantenerlos a disposición de los alumnos y académicos de la Casa de Estudios de forma gratuita, pero también a otras instituciones y entidades, con libre acceso y en un horario razonable. La iniciativa fue gestionada por la carrera de Turismo del plantel. En este sentido, la Biblioteca de esta Universidad recibirá una placa que acredita su participación en el Programa de Bibliotecas Depositarias de la OMT. Hasta el momento se ha adquirido tres textos. El primero es "El turismo rural en las Américas y su contribución a la creación de empleo y a la conservación del patrimonio", correspondiente al seminario realizado por la OMT entre el 12 y 13 de mayo del 2003, en Asunción, Paraguay. También se encuentra a disposición de los interesados el libro "Deporte y turismo: destino América Latina. Productos comercializados por tour operadores europeos", de la sección de Estudios de Mercado y Técnicas de Promoción de la OMT. Abre sus puertas la nueva sala de investigación del Archivo Histórico de Valencia
La nueva sala de investigación del Archivo Histórico Municipal, en el Palacio de Cervelló de Valencia, ha abierto este miércoles sus puertas a los investigadores y público en general, después de haber sido sometido a un proceso de adecuación. El horario de atención al público de la sala es de 9 a 14 horas, de lunes a viernes, y durante los meses de enero a junio, y en octubre y noviembre, se podrá acceder a este servicio de 16.45 a 18.45 horas. Las citadas fuentes explicaron que en la sala de investigación se realizarán las consultas y análisis de las actas y documentos notariales que componen el archivo municipal de la ciudad. Estos fondos recogen textos y material documental que se remontan hasta el año 1306, los cuales estaban localizados en lugares dispersos hasta la apertura del Palacio de Cervelló como sede del Archivo Histórico Municipal. La concejala delegada de Cultura, María José Alcón, subrayó que entre las series más importantes se encuentran los códices de "Manuals del Consell", "Cartes Reials", "Lletres Missives" y "Privilegis Reials", además de documentación económica como la correspondiente a la "Taula de Canvis", "Abastecimients", "Comercio", y "Lonja", entre otros. "Estos valiosos documentos se encuentran ahora en una sala dotada de la tecnología apropiada para garantizar el acceso de los investigadores a los textos mediante microfilm, de forma rápida y ordenada", agregó Alcón. Por otro lado, la edil indicó que el edificio de nueva planta anexo al palacio alberga todo el archivo documental, mientras que la zona noble, el palacio en sí, es área de exposición. Asimismo, la planta baja recoge la historia del inmueble, que fue residencia de personajes ilustres, entre ellos los monarcas Isabel II y Fernando VII, y también permite conocer la historia de la familia Cervelló y la del Archivo Municipal, desde Jaume I hasta nuestros días. Por último, la responsable municipal de Cultura señaló que en la sala de consulta e investigación se atenderá a todos los ciudadanos que lo requieran, tanto a los investigadores universitarios como al público en general. Cádiz: Los fondos documentales del Instituto Columela, transferidos al Archivo Histórico
Los fondos documentales del Instituto Columela han sido transferidos al Archivo Histórico Provincial, culminando así las negociaciones llevadas a cabo durante más de diez años y con las que se da cumplimiento a la legislación vigente, tanto estatal como autonómica, en materia de patrimonio histórico. De un primer contacto de los técnicos del Archivo Provincial con la documentación se puede calcular que se han transferido unos 600 legajos, 650 libros registros y 81 tomos de 'La Gaceta de Madrid' que abarcan un periodo de tiempo que va desde 1787 a 1950. Los fondos documentales que custodiaba el referido centro de enseñanza son su archivo, que data de 1863, fecha de fundación del instituto, hasta 1950; los archivos de la Escuela de Comercio, Industria y Navegación, fundada en 1851 y que funcionó hasta 1863, año en que se suprimió al crearse el instituto de enseñanza media; el de la Escuela de Comercio y Matemáticas del Consulado de Cádiz, una escuela funcionó desde el siglo XVIII, aunque la documentaciónque se conserva va de 1818 a 1836. También se ha transferido El libro de cargo general a los oficiales del Correo de Cádiz, una pieza de singular valor en la que constan las cartas que salian para España hacia a Inglaterra, Francia, Alemania, entre otros países, figurando lo que se abonaba como derecho del correo. Este traslado al Archivo Histórico supone poner a disposición de todos los gaditanos una documentación de gran valor y que posibilitará el conocimiento de la historia de Cádiz y su provincia. El Archivo de la Catedral de Oviedo volverá a abrir sus puertas a mediados de enero de 2004
Poco tiempo más. Uno de los garantes de la cultura y la historia de la ciudad, el Archivo de la Catedral, podría volver a abrir sus puertas al público a mediados del próximo mes de enero, según confirmó el canónigo archivero, Agustín Hevia Ballina. Su apertura está condicionada, como lo ha estado durante el tiempo en que ha permanecido cerrado, a la entrega al Obispado de Oviedo de las obras de restauración del Claustro. Algo que se producirá el próximo día 29 de diciembre. La idea de Hevia es abrirlo en toda su amplitud. En el aspecto de la informatización y la digitalización intentará «darle un impulso grande, porque es muy necesario». En cuanto a los rumores que, hace unos meses, hablaban de una posible reubicación. El archivero ha sido siempre muy claro y siempre ha mantenido que «no es lo conveniente». El Archivo tiene grandes tesoros como el 'Libro de los testamentos', el gran códice de la Catedral que puede compararse con los cuatro mejores códices del mundo. Hay también otros códices importantes como la 'Regla colorada' y la 'Regla blanca', además de 47 libros de genealogías y 87 volúmenes de actas capitulares. En el registro también se encuentran los trabajos del anterior canónigo archivero, el malogrado Raúl Arias, que había publicado varios libros sobre el archivo. Junto a María Sanhuesa realizó el único catálogo existente, y todavía inédito, de sus fondos musicológicos. Biblioteca Miguel Cervantes dedica portal a chileno Gonzalo Rojas
La Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes (BVMC) ha dedicado una de sus páginas web al poeta chileno Gonzalo Rojas, Premio Cervantes 2003, donde él mismo ofrece su propia voz en la lectura de algunas de sus composiciones. De esta manera, la Miguel de Cervantes, creada por la Universidad de la ciudad mediterránea de Alicante, se une a la celebración de la elección de Rojas como Premio Cervantes con la difusión en Internet, a través de , de una selección de sus poemas. Asimismo, entre otros contenidos, la "biblioteca de autor Gonzalo Rojas" ofrece una videoteca compuesta por el documental "Un brindis por la alegría. Viaje al Sur con Gonzalo Rojas", que a su vez consta de una entrevista y de la lectura de varios poemas. Rojas, nacido en Lebu (Chile) en 1917, ha conseguido otros prestigiosos premios literarios antes que el Cervantes, como el Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana y el Nacional de Literatura chilena, ambos en 1992, y el Octavio Paz de Poesía y Ensayo, en 1998. La Biblioteca Miguel de Cervantes, cuyo presidente de honor es el escritor peruano Mario Vargas Llosa, es el proyecto más ambicioso de digitalización documental del patrimonio cultural iberoamericano. La Asociación de Amigos de la Biblioteca de Huelva recoge libros para centros de Perú
La Asociación de Amigos de la Biblioteca Provincial de Huelva Libros Solidarios, en colaboración con la propia biblioteca y con la ONG Libros para el Mundo, va a poner en marcha esta Navidad una campaña de recogida de libros y captación de recursos económicos para bibliotecas de Perú. El proyecto permitirá dotar de material a cuatro bibliotecas de la región de Ayacucho, ubicadas en centros escolares pero que, por la falta de medios existente, se abren al resto de la población y funcionan así como bibliotecas públicas. Se enmarca en una campaña mayor por la que la ONG Libros para el Mundo actuará en un total de quince bibliotecas de Ayacucho, Cuzco y la zona metropolitana de Lima. Las bibliotecas que se dotarán con libros conseguidos en Huelva son Abraham Valdelomar, Simón Bolívar, José Félix Iguain y Juan Pablo Vizcardo. Dan servicio a una población de más de 30.000 habitantes, con un alto porcentaje de analfabetismo. Se trata de zonas urbanas marginales |
