Abstract:

The evaluation of publications is crucial to establish the value of authors and institutions. This paper reviews the most important steps in the history of evaluation and makes an overview of the most recent literature on the subject. Two papers criticising the ISI bibliometric indicators (mainly the"Impact Factor") are discussed; the Italian Ministry of Education and Ministry of the Health evaluative criteria are analyzed. In the conclusions, the new perspectives offered both by the electronic journals usage patterns and the Citebase software are presented.
