Using Digital Libraries as a Community Hall for Worldwide Information Spiral Development
International Symposium on Research, Development and Practice in Digital Libraries / . Abstract: This paper describes our concept of a digital library from the user's viewpoint based on information flow and information organization, and explains it using a three-layer model of information distribution -- information provider, information broker, and information user. Our worldwide communication hall prototype system is connected to the World Wide Web and supports the total flow of information around the user. It consists of the virtual personal library client Webshelf, an information publishing server, and the hypermedia archive server Webarchive. Webshelf allows users to virtually personalize information on the World Wide Web, to organize it to meet their needs, to create new information on the basis of the organized information, and to publish this new information. Our prototype implementation has shown that Webarchive offers an effective solution for the information volatility problem by storing all the information obtained by the user and managing link consistency.
