Abstract:

ADL will provide on-line public access to maps, photos, and other information referenced in geographic terms. Much of this data currently is found only at major research libraries. The Alexandria Project's goal is to build a distributed digital library for materials that are referenced in geographic terms, such as by the names of communities or the types of geological features found in the material. The Alexandria Digital Library (ADL) will comprise a set of Internet nodes implementing combinations of the four primary ADL architecture components--collections, catalogs, interfaces, and ingest facilities (which a digital library uses to add documents and information about document cataloging and access).
