Retrospective conversion: the experience at the University of Botswana Library

Abstract:

This paper describes the University of Botswana Library (UBL) retrospective conversion project and introduces the UBL automation planning activities. The paper also briefly discusses sources of records used in the creation of UBL database; authority control measures; decisions made regarding the editing of records and the recommended conversion procedures. More attention is placed on the actual UBL conversion project as well as the experiences of other libraries. This part details how the project was carried out at U.B. Library from September 1995 until July 1997 and reports implications in terms of staffing arrangements, success rates and quality considerations. Lastly, the paper describes the methods the library used to convert the collection. It examines the problems encountered throughout the project and gives advice to libraries that might be in the process of embarking on a similar protect. Este papel describe la Universidad de Biblioteca de Botswana (UBL) el proyecto retrospectivo de conversión e introduce el UBL la automatización que planifica actividades. El papel también brevemente discute fuentes de registros usó en la creación de UBL de base de datos; la autoridad controla medidas; las decisiones hicieron con respecto a la redacción de registros y los procedimientos recomendados de conversión. Más atención se pone sobre el UBL el real conversión proyecta así como también las experiencias de otras bibliotecas. Esta parte detalla como el proyecto se efectuó al U.El b. La biblioteca desde Septiembre 1995 hasta el que Julio 1997 e informe implicaciones desde el punto de vista de la contratación de de arreglos, el éxito clasifica y calidad de consideraciones. Finalmente, el papel describe los métodos la biblioteca usó a convierta el recaudo. Examina los problemas encontrado a lo largo del proyecto y da consejo a bibliotecas que pueden estar en el proceso de embarcar sobre un similar protege.
