Aslib proceedings 2000 52 (7)254-263 Abstract: European Union (EU) education policy encourages the integration of a European dirnension across the curriculurn to prepare young people for participation in the EU. This artícíe discusses the findings of a survey investigating the European inforrnation needs of secondary school teachers in relation to the teaching of the European dirnension. lnterviews were undertaken with a srnall sample of teachers and school librarians in selected schools of Aberdeen City ancí Aberdeenshire. The article discusses three main issues: inconsistency in the implernentation of the European dirnension at school level, arnbivalent perception of what it actually rneans, and need for appropriate resources to enable teachers to include the European dirnension in their teaching. The European Cornrnission Representation Office in the UK has responded to the needs of the school sector by establishing a network of European Resources Centres for Schools and Colleges. Further research is required to assess the irnpact of these developrnents.
