Abstract:

We have all been lulled into thinking that the personal computer is the natural platform for inforrnation seeking activities of al! kinds. The arrlval of the Web surely cernented its posi-t¡on, because, via the Web, it is possible to obtain vast arnounts of information in text, pictorlal and audio forrns, and the opportuni-ties for processing and packaging this data are endless. Of course, a price has to be paid in terrns of user-friendliness/sirnplicity of use - cornputers are st!!! not easy to use, only a srnall percentage of their functions are ever utilised and their rnass rnarket credentials are questionable. Not so long ~go it did seern on the cards that television - in the fonn of web access or digital TV - would pose something of a threat to the PC. But the threat appears to be a long time corning and with the passage of time the threat appears to be dissipating.
