Abstract:

In their book Cohesion in English, Halliday and Hasan (1976) propose a general tyipology of connectors, involving four main categories: additive, adversative, causial, and temporal. By connectors, Halliday and Hasan mean words and phrases, reigardless of their grammatical status, whose function is to provide linkage between the information contained in one sentence and that contained in another. Typicali ly connectors occur at the beginning of a sentence in English, and signal a connecition with information provided in the previous sentence or, more generally, the previous section of text.
