The Pragmatks of Puuctuation and Its Problematic Nature in Translation
Babel 2000 46 (2)112-125 Abstract: This article atternpts tu describe sorne uf the pragmatic and semantic functiuns uf two impurtant punctuation marks. These are the semicolon (;>and the colon (:). The reason for this descriptiun is that no studies have pruvided a detailed description uf the pragmatic and semantic functions of these marks. These marks are mustly used in Arabic fur intunatiunal or decurative purposes. It was found that the system of punctuation marks in Arabic is inadequate as it does not specify rules for using them. Huwever, in this study, it was fuund that the punctuatiun marks have linguistic implicatiuns that are not recognized by linguists nor by translaturs. The implicatiuns discassed here are the emphatic, additive, contrastive, and substantiative functiuns.
