Abstract:

This paper is a contribution to the debate about translation and culture. It is a discussioa of culture-specific items in particular within the framework of film and TV-series titíes. The argumeat put forward is that differeat cultural coatexts represent differeat architectural coastructions aad distiactive 'lego' blocks. Although they appear as a 'pick'n'mix' the examples aim to offer iasights into how culture embodies people' s experiences aad values and the ways and meaas by which their universe is conceptualised. It illustrates how understanding and traaslating of SL requires more thaa liaguistic competeace and that the transíator is entering hostile territory. The transíator's meticulously sculptured final product is a multi-staged process influeaced by several factors to reach the desired effect in the target language. The paper explores several areas and assesses the nature of the translatiag outcome. The overalí impression that can be inferred from translating culture specific items is that coateat and form of SL messages oftea undergo sorne surgical work. The purpose is ultimately TL compatibility and effect, often at the expense of SL deformity
