Archives and Current Records: Towards a Set of Guiding Principles

Abstract:

This paper describes a set of principles designed to help archives position themselves to address the management of current records. The principles provide a framework within which policies and strategies can be developed to guide archives in addressing the increasingly complex, electronic-based record keeping environments supported in records creating organizations around the world. The principles were developed by the members of the Committee on Electronic and Other Current Records (CECR), presented to the delegates to the 1998 Conference internationale de la table ronde des archives, reviewed by the Commission on Program Management of the ICA, and through their publication in Janus1, submitted to the members of the ICA for their review. The principles were revised as a result of this consultation and members of the CECR suggested that they be presented within the context of the original paper published in Janus.
