English Studies 2001 82 (4)349-381 Abstract: On 1 May 1997 the political map of Britain changed from blue to red. It was a redletter day also in the sense that it marked an unprecedented realignment, or dealignment, of the national newspaper press: in the previous General Election, 12 out of 18 papers had come out for the Conservatives, or perhaps more appropriately, against Labour; in 1997 Tony Blairs reconstructed Labour Party was endorsed by a majority of dailies and Sundays.
