Abstract:

Slang has often been considered an illegitimate topic in linguistics. Perhaps the main reason for this is to be found in the fact that slang, like other modes of nonstandard speech, runs counter to the idealized and homogeneous models of language that many linguists have aimed to describe. Such neglect has no doubt been unfortunate, among other reasons because it has discounted the importance of verbal playfulness and creativity in wordformation.
