'The Dead'. A Rejoinder To Tanja Vesala-Varttala
English Studies 2001 82 (4)323-325 Abstract: Dr Vesala-Varttala finds me 'severely wanting on important literary theoretical grounds'. I can think of no credible theory of reading that would validate these critical views of Joyce's story. If these assertions are the result of theory, then it is theory that is severely wanting. In the short space allowed me I will not spend much time trying to answer charges that I am against paying attention to marginal figures; that I referred (with failed irony, alas) to Gabriel as 'poor man'; that therefore I cannot tell the difference between characters in a story and people in life; that I reduced J to j in the title of the book ReJoycing and that this is very revealing.
