Abstract:

The aim of this article is to analyse the relationship between two themes which appear in Julian Barnes’s A History of the World in 10 1 /2 Chapters: history and science. From an academic point of view, the two disciplines these themes represent are currently approached in similar ways. Paradoxically, this renders a joint fictionalisation of these themes problematic, since their rivalling – because converging – claims threaten to push one of the themes into the background. This article will first concentrate on the theme of science, comparing science as it appears in the novel with the way it is currently articulated in academia. The article will then analyse the extent to which the novel’s presentation of the theme of history does or does not constrain a current articulation of the theme of science.
