Abstract:

On what Max Black calls the ‘comparison view’, metaphors are abbreviated similes: one says ‘John is a lion’ meaning to say that – meaning that – John is like a lion. Thus the comparison view ‘reduces’ the false remark (that a human being is a lion) to the truth that a particular person is like a lion – a true remark since anything is like anything else (in some respect or other). Such a view invites araphrase in order to decipher the real meaning of a metaphor.
