Abstract:

One goal of the Cultural Revolution, says Sheng Ping, was ‘to undermine the authority of some knowledgeable teachers. There used to be a slogan, “Whoever has knowledge is a reactionary element”’ (12). From a time when English was disparaged in China, Sheng tells a familiar story – father sent to the countryside for reeducation, the family’s house ransacked by book-burning Red Guards, and a neighbor persecuted to the point of suicide. But Sheng persisted in her desire to learn, eventually becoming a college English teacher. Hers is one of the many voices collected by Kate Parry in Culture, Literacy and Learning English: Voices from the Chinese Classroom. Originally written to fulfill the requirements of the Nanjing University / United Board College English Training Program in the mid-nineties, the essays ‘express the views of the majority of Chinese teachers toward literacy acquisition and strategies in learning and teaching English’, according to MLJ reviewer Tang Yanfang.
