Abstract:

If it is one of the more familiar commonplaces of amatory rhetoric that love constructs around itself a separate and autonomous reality in which the categories and conventions of the ordinary world have no sway, it is scarcely less familiar a commonplace that no enclave of the spirit, however jealously defended, is ultimately secure against the encroachments of the external world.
