English Studies 2001 82 (1)52-65 Abstract: This review will explore the variety of responses from the poets Ive selected who had work published in 1999. As we shall see, there are a variety of answers, not all of them successful. So let me say again (since I sometimes wonder if its not being forgotten) that poetry is an Art form. It is not autobiography, not loose chatter, not simply an anecdote, not anxiety, not drivelling about the state of a relationship, or maunderings about dead parents. It is not that these subjects are invalid, but all too often the material remains inert, the basic substance of the poem is unworked on it remains merely potential rather than being transmuted, in accordance with the technical demands of poetry, into a work of Art.
