'An Image Of The Times': Ben Jonson's Revision Of Every Man In His Humour

Abstract:

Sometime before 1616, Ben Jonson set to work with a quarto text of his Every Man in his Humour to prepare a new version. The revision was prompted by the forthcoming folio of his collected works; the play was to appear at its head. It had been performed in 1598, and printed in 1601. In his revision Jonson changed the setting from Italy to England and anglicized most of the characters’ names, re-punctuated throughout and, in minuter and in larger ways, refashioned a great deal of the dialogue.
