The Dove Ascending: The Case For Elizabeth Gaskell
English Studies 2000 81 (6)531-547 Abstract: I think it is now possible to argue that Elizabeth Gaskell is pre-eminent among Victorian women novelists. At least that case needs to be put: for the opinion that it is George Eliot who deserves that particular accolade has acquired the sclerosis of orthodoxy, and, even though a heterodox minority may still hold out for Charlotte or Emily Brontë, nobody has even considered the claims of Elizabeth Gaskell. If I make the attempt here, first generally, and then specifically in relation to North and South, it is with the aim of stimulating critical discussion.
