Abstract:

In June 2000, the Greater Cincinnati Memory Project became available on the World Wide Web (http://memory.gclc-lib.org). The Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium (GCLC) sponsored the pilot phase of this project, which included members from all types of libraries in Greater Cincinnati, including northern Kentucky. The project's intent was to make special collections of local history materials in the Greater Cincinnati area accessible through the World Wide Web. Initial discussions focused the project on pre-1940 photographs and postcards relating to landmarks and events of local interest. The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance for structuring a project among several institutions to provide efficient use of resources as well as to provide an outline of issues that must be addressed when embarking on a first time digital imaging project.
