Librarians and university staff in the United Kingdom
Bulletin des Bibliotheques de France 2000 45 (1) Abstract: This article sets out to examine the role of academic librarians in universities and colleges of higher education in the United Kingdom. The position of the library within its parent institution is considered from structural and managerial perspectives. The perceptions that are held about librarians in a range of different roles are discussed. Although generally well regarded as individuals, librarians tend to be viewed by their academic colleagues as service providers rather than academic equals. It is concluded that librarians should focus on developing and promoting the skills of their own profession rather than necessarily aiming for parity with academic teaching staff.
