Per un Tesoro della biblioteconomia italiana = For a Treasure of the Italian librarianship

Abstract:

ABSTRACT ITALIANO. [english abstract available below]: Si propone all'Associazione italiana biblioteche l'impresa di creare un "Tesoro" della biblioteconomia italiana, cioè un glossario storico di questa disciplina. Esso sarebbe lo specchio della professione, che ripercorrerebbe in esso la propria storia e in esso controllerebbe la propria maturità. La caratteristica essenziale della proposta sta nell'indicazione di un Tesoro come strumento storico, fondato su un apparato storico esemplificativo, che lo differenzierebbe da quel poco che è esistito finora in Italia. Si prende in breve esame, a questo scopo, l'opera italiana più nota in questo campo, il Vocabolario bibliografico (1940) di Giuseppe Fumagalli, e se ne mettono in rilievo l'obsolescenza e le manchevolezze, dovute soprattutto alla mancanza di coscienza storica. Si suggeriscono poi, offrendoli alla discussione, i criterî cui l'opera dovrebbe ispirarsi: i limiti disciplinari da coprire (con l'esclusione di paleografia e codicologia); i limiti delle testimonianze da accettare; i limiti della copertura temporale (si propone l'inizio del 19° secolo); che cosa fare per i termini non testimoniati (si suggerisce la possibilità di un'appendice); le fonti cui attenersi (questioni riguardanti i seriali, le monografie, i testi tradotti da altre lingue); I metodi di spoglio (integrale per certe categorie di testi, e selettivo per altre); la struttura che dovrebbero avere le voci; 8) i modi di presentazione e organizzazione del materiale (se a stampa, possibile pubblicazione a fogli mobili); l'apparato operativo che l'Associazione dovrebbe creare al proprio interno per avviare e condurre l'opera. Per quest'apparato operativo, si pensa alla formazione di un gruppo di lavoro, composto di professionali con interessi storici, con l'eventuale apporto di collaboratori esterni e, soprattutto, la presenza di uno o più linguisti con esperienze lessicografiche. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It has been proposed that the Italian Library Association should create a "Treasure" of the Italian librarianship, that is an historical glossary of this subject. This would be the mirror of the profession, which covers its history and verifies its maturity. The essential characteristic of the proposal lies in the indication of a Treasure as an historical instrument, founded on an illustrative historical system, that would differentiate it from what little has existed in Italy up to now. For this reason it is worth briefly examining the most famous Italian work in this field, the Vocabolario bibliografico (Bibliographic Vocabulary) (1940) by Giuseppe Fumagalli, and noting its obsoleteness and inadequacy, due above all to the lack of historical knowledge. The criteria by which the work should be inspired are then presented (while offering them for discussion): the disciplinary limits to be covered (with the exclusion of palaeography and codicology); the limits of the testimonies to be accepted; the limits of time (the beginning of the 19th century is proposed; what to do for the terms not testified to (the possibility of an appendix is suggested); the sources to be used (questions regarding serials, monographs, texts translated from other languages); the methods of sorting (complete for certain categories of texts, and selective for others); the structure that the various items should have; the ways of presenting and arranging the material (if printed, the possible publication in loose sheets); the operational system that the Association should create within itself to begin and carry out the job. For this system, it has been thought to form a work group, composed of professionals with historical interests, with the possible contribution of external assistants and, above all, the presence of one or more linguists with lexicographical experience.
